Prophet Dr. Nana Abboh, founder of the International Pure Fire Chapel, has expressed concern that the modern approach to tithing in cash has, in some churches, fuelled unfair treatment among members.
He argues that the emphasis on money has opened the door for pastors to allegedly assess and rank congregants based on what they contribute financially, leading to a quiet form of discrimination.
Speaking on United Showbiz on April 25, 2026, he explained that tithing in its original biblical sense was not restricted to cash payments, but included a wider range of contributions.
“Let’s say you guys are my church members, if you are all paying tithes of ten percent, I can calculate everybody’s monthly salary,” he said.
“If one of you has a higher salary than the other, I am more likely to prioritise the person with the higher salary.”
“That is why God in His infinite wisdom stated that tithe does not have to be just money, it could be farm produce or livestock or anything of value,” Prophet Dr. Nana Abboh stated.
According to him, this shift toward strictly monetary tithing is what has encouraged inequality within church settings, stressing that the original idea was meant to prevent such divisions rather than create them.
