Concerns are growing within Ghana’s football circles after the Black Stars lost one of their most influential players ahead of their international friendly against Mexico.
Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has admitted that the absence of Mohammed Kudus could disrupt the team’s rhythm as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Kudus, who recently joined Tottenham Hotspur, has been ruled out through injury, a development Gyan believes leaves a major gap in the national team setup.
Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV, the former striker explained that Kudus has grown into one of the side’s most important figures, particularly because of his ability to drive play from midfield into attack.
Gyan noted that players with Kudus’ qualities are difficult to replace, stressing that the midfielder brings a level of energy and creativity that few can replicate in modern football.
The ex-Black Stars skipper also challenged head coach Carlos Queiroz and his technical handlers to rely on the depth within the squad. According to him, international tournaments often test a team’s bench strength, especially when injuries strike at crucial moments.
Gyan insisted, adding that good replacements are the only way to survive the rigours of major international competitions.
Even with the setback, the former Sunderland forward maintained that Ghana’s objectives remain intact as the team continues preparations for football’s biggest tournament.
The timing of Kudus’ injury has, however, raised fresh concerns as Ghana fine-tunes plans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be staged in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The Black Stars will compete in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
