Independent MP for Asante Akim North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, is expected to face a Dutch court within the next two days after his arrest at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport over alleged financial crimes.
Information gathered indicates that the lawmaker was picked up on Sunday, May 8, in connection with suspected money laundering and romance scam-related activities.
Sources close to his legal team told Citi News that the MP intends to challenge both the basis of his arrest and the legality of his continued detention when he appears before the court in the Netherlands.
Parliament officially confirmed the development through a statement signed by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror. The statement said the House had been notified of the arrest and had begun engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to obtain more details about the matter.
According to the statement, the Speaker of Parliament together with parliamentary leadership remains in active communication with the mission as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the detention of the Independent legislator.
Meanwhile, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has assured the public that the MP is safe and has not been harmed while in custody.
