University of Ghana disowns viral letter on Malik Basintale’s degree verification
The University of Ghana has publicly discredited a letter circulating online that claims the institution verified the academic credentials of Malik Basintale, the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).
In a statement dated June 2, 2025, Dr. Elizier Taiba Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director of the University’s Public Affairs Directorate, clarified that the letter being shared, allegedly signed by Registrar Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah and addressed to the Secretary of the Civil Service Council, was entirely fabricated.
“The said letter is a forgery and neither the Registrar nor any other officer of the University has received, processed or responded to any such request,” the university stated unequivocally.
The document in question, dated May 27, 2025, bore the title “RE: REQUEST FOR VERIFICATION OF DEGREE – MALIK BASINTALE.” It quickly spread across various social media platforms, prompting widespread speculation about Basintale’s qualifications.
The university has since issued a firm disclaimer under the heading “DISCLAIMER ON PURPORTED LETTER REGARDING DEGREE VERIFICATION FOR MALIK BASINTALE.” The administration has urged the public to treat the letter as false and without merit.
“The public is hereby urged to disregard the said letter,” the university emphasized.
This controversy comes amid ongoing scrutiny of high-profile public appointments and qualifications in Ghana, placing the authenticity of academic records under the spotlight once again.
