Police Foil Fresh Ammunition Haul as Bus Headed North Is Stopped at Asankare

Police intercept a passenger bus at Asankare and seize over 1,000 rounds of ammunition hidden during a routine stop en route to northern Ghana.

Police have stopped a passenger bus at the Asankare barrier in the Ashanti Region after uncovering more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition being transported from Accra toward northern Ghana.

The interception occurred during routine operations when officers on duty halted a Kia Granbird bus with registration number AK 1309–21. A subsequent inspection revealed a sack containing 1,050 AAA and BB cartridge ammunition hidden on the vehicle.

The bus, which had 45 passengers on board, was being driven by 42-year-old Mohammed Gzali, assisted by Mohammed Jabir, 22. According to a police situational report, the vehicle was traveling from Accra to Tamale and was expected to continue on to Savulegu.

Officers initially became uneasy during the stop and alerted their superiors for reinforcement. As detailed in the report, “During the routine check, officers became suspicious that the driver might be conveying incriminating items. The Divisional Commander was immediately informed and subsequently arrived at the scene together with the Juaso District Commander and the Juaso District Crime Officer. Upon their arrival, an extensive search of the vehicle was conducted.”

That search led to the discovery of the sack of ammunition. When questioned, the driver reportedly told police that the parcel had been handed to him by an unidentified person at the station and was meant to be delivered to an individual known as Oboye in Tamale.

Following the discovery, police took control of the bus and secured the ammunition as evidence. “The bus was immediately impounded, and the ammunition was retained as exhibits. The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with ongoing investigations,” the situational report said.

Authorities say investigations are continuing to determine the origin of the ammunition and its intended use.
