Persistent public talk about a strained relationship between gospel singer Great Ampong and late highlife icon Daddy Lumba has resurfaced, but Ampong insists the narrative has been misunderstood from the start.
In an interview with Nana Romeo on UTV’s ‘Atuu’ program, he pushed back against claims that he ever insulted the late musician. According to him, his public comments over the years were always restrained and focused on one issue only, a financial disagreement he says was never resolved.
Ampong stressed that even in hindsight, he sees no moment where he crossed the line in his remarks. He added that if he had spoken unfairly about Daddy Lumba, he would likely feel remorse today, especially now that the singer has passed on.
When the conversation turned to the alleged debt, he avoided giving fresh details and said he had already closed that chapter publicly in 2023, choosing not to continue discussing it.
“I never bad-mouthed Daddy Lumba; I was just demanding my money. If I had said anything unwarranted about him, I’m sure I would regret it now, but that never happened,” Great Ampong said.
Their professional connection dates back to 2015, when the two artistes released a joint gospel-highlife project titled Hosanna. In a 2016 interview with Deloris Frimpong Manso, Ampong recounted that the collaboration was initiated by Daddy Lumba, who reached out after expressing admiration for his music.
“He called me on the phone and said he was a fan of my work and would like us to collaborate on a project. He invited me to his house, and we had a discussion,” he noted.
The project featured eight tracks, and Ampong maintains that he was responsible for writing six of them. While the album gained public attention, he says tensions emerged shortly after its release.
He alleges that proceeds from the launch were taken without his share, despite what he describes as his own financial and creative input. He also claims that all the songs from the project were later uploaded onto Daddy Lumba’s personal digital platforms.
Over time, Ampong has returned to the subject in multiple interviews, consistently expressing dissatisfaction with how the situation unfolded between them.
