Songwriting is a calling, not for everyone – says Stay Jay

Stay Jay

Ghanaian musician and songwriter Stay Jay has expressed that many artists in the music industry are not true songwriters.

Known in private life as William Kojo Johnson, the ‘Yenko Nkoaa’ hitmaker shared his perspective during an interview with AJ Sarpong on 3FM Lounge, emphasizing that songwriting is a challenging craft.

According to Stay Jay, songwriting is more than a skill—it’s a calling that requires natural talent and divine inspiration.

“Songwriting is not easy… I don’t think a lot of people are writers. They just get the vibe and do whatever they do, but if you want to be a writer, it’s a calling. You have to get the gift from God,” he explained.

Despite acknowledging the difficulty of songwriting, Stay Jay revealed that he doesn’t face such struggles when creating music.

“Whenever I’m in the studio, I pray before working on a song. I don’t write songs; they just come to me. With the beat and everything in my head, I tell the engineer, and we’re good to go,” he added.
