Kumawood actor Yaw Dabo has offered a candid look into the financial side of Ghana’s movie industry, saying the screen gave him recognition but not the level of income many might assume.
In an interview with Nana Romeo on UTV’s Atuu, the comic actor explained that his acting career largely translated into visibility rather than direct wealth. According to him, most of his earnings have come from advertising work and other side engagements linked to his fame.
“Movies brought money, but not a lot. What it does is it gives you popularity and stardom. You can get advertising gigs and other deals. One advertising gig can pay more than a movie gig,” he said.
Even with the relatively small pay from film roles, Dabo insists he does not regret his journey in the industry, stressing that the exposure has been far more valuable than the paychecks alone.
“It has blessed me a lot. Through acting, I have gotten the chance to build a life for myself and my family. I got a place for my mother as well,” Yaw Dabo stated.
His reflections feed into wider conversations about how much creatives earn in Ghana, particularly the long-term financial stability of actors and how many veterans manage life after active screen roles.
