Scaling down Independence Day Celebrations saved Ghana GH₵19M – President John Mahama reveals

President John Dramani Mahama has justified the decision to scale back Ghana’s 2025 Independence Day celebrations, revealing that the move saved the nation GH₵19 million.

Speaking during the 68th Independence Day event on March 6, 2025, President Mahama explained that a full-scale celebration at Independence Square would have cost at least GH₵20 million. Instead, the more modest event at the Jubilee House forecourt required only a fraction of that amount.

“The state spent GH₵15 million on last year’s celebration in Koforidua and GH₵13.7 million the previous year in Ho. This year, estimates indicated that a full-scale event at the Black Star Square would have cost GH₵20 million,” he noted.

“In a year when we are calling on everyone to sacrifice—including workers who have accepted a base pay adjustment far below inflation—it would be unconscionable to spend that amount on a few hours of celebration,” President John Mahama added.

Mahama framed the decision as part of a broader commitment to fiscal responsibility amid Ghana’s ongoing economic challenges. He emphasized that while Independence Day remains a significant milestone, financial prudence must take precedence.

“Reducing the scale of the event does not diminish its importance. Ghana’s independence is the most defining moment in our history—one that set us on the path of nationhood and inspired other African nations to pursue self-determination,” the President stated.

Traditionally held at the Black Star Square, Independence Day celebrations have, in recent years, rotated among various regions. However, due to the current economic climate, Mahama said it was necessary to pause that arrangement.

The scaled-down event was attended by key government officials, former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo, and foreign dignitaries, including Tanzania’s former President Jakaya Kikwete, who served as the special guest.
