Ghanaian comedian Derick Kobina Bonney, popularly known as DKB, has publicly retracted his accusation that MTN Ghana was “stealing” his mobile data, admitting instead that his misunderstanding stemmed from overlooked phone settings and app behavior.
Earlier in July, DKB took to X (formerly Twitter) with a now-deleted video, claiming his 214GB data bundle had mysteriously vanished in just two weeks, a pattern he found suspicious, given that smaller 92GB packages had previously lasted much longer.
But just days later, on July 22, he returned with a follow-up video offering clarity and an apology. According to DKB, MTN Ghana had personally contacted him to walk through his data consumption over the last six months.
“They got in touch and went line for line about my consumption over six months, and I’ve gotten to know what is secretly consuming my data,” he disclosed.
Contrary to his earlier claims, DKB acknowledged that MTN was not responsible for the rapid data depletion.
Instead, he realized that background phone functions and high-bandwidth apps were to blame. Without his knowledge, certain services had been running silently, contributing to his unusually high data usage.
Among the culprits DKB identified were:
Watching YouTube in high-definition formats like 1080p, 2K, or 4K;
Automatic uploads from Google Photos;
Screen casting from mobile devices;
Apps that update in the background without user prompts.
In his official apology video, DKB addressed MTN directly with the caption: “Attention: @MTNGhana DOESN’T STEAL YOUR DATA!”
He also advised fellow users to be vigilant about hidden data consumption and urged them to adjust their phone settings accordingly. The comedian wrapped up his message with a sincere apology to MTN for his earlier allegations.
