Kafui Danku Hails GH₵20m Film Fund as Major Boost for Ghana’s Creative Industry

A new chapter may be opening for Ghana’s film industry after the launch of a GH₵20 million Film Development Fund aimed at supporting creatives and businesses within the sector.

Speaking during the official unveiling of the fund on May 20, 2026, actress and Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, Kafui Danku, described the initiative as a landmark achievement for the country’s audio-visual space.

She revealed that the fund begins with a GH₵20 million seed allocation, marking what she believes is the first major financial support structure introduced since the establishment of the NFA.

“This is a milestone for the Ghanaian film and audio-visual industry. For the first time since the inception of the NFA, we have a fund. A seed fund of GH₵20 million. Isn’t that exciting?” she said.

According to Kafui Danku, access to funding has remained one of the industry’s biggest struggles for years, slowing down growth and limiting opportunities for filmmakers and other creatives.

“For a very long time, this has been a challenge. Finance has been a challenge and now the government has given and acted on their promises,” she stated.

She explained that the newly introduced fund is expected to help expand the industry while also creating a sustainable financial structure that can continue supporting future generations of creatives.

“This is seed money and we all know what seed does. We are going to be able to enjoy or use this money responsibly to boost our industry. We need to grow and we will not just be growing the industry but the fund as well,” she shared.

Kafui Danku also clarified that the support package should not be mistaken for grants or giveaways, stressing that repayment structures are already being considered to keep the initiative running effectively.

“The fund is not free money. We have started discussions on various ways to recoup the loans. That is in check and in due time, we will communicate everything the public wants to know,” she noted.

She further disclosed that the opportunity is not limited to filmmakers alone, saying the fund is open to a broad range of professionals and businesses operating within the audio-visual sector.

“Everyone in the audiovisuals ecosystem, content creators, film distributors, film producers, film exhibitors, broadcasters and everybody in the film ecosystem are all qualified to get access to the fund,” Danku stated.
