Police Nab Suspected Gang Tied to Coordinated Robberies Across Major Cities

Ghana Police arrest suspects tied to a robbery ring behind gold scams, impersonation, and attacks across major cities.

The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a suspected armed robbery network accused of orchestrating a string of violent operations across Accra, Tema, Anyinam, Kumasi, and Takoradi, with targets reportedly including cash, gold, and mercury.

Ghana Police Service confirmed that the arrests were executed through coordinated operations led by the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police.

Investigators say the case first came to light after an Ivorian businessman, Mousa Bamba, reported being deceived into meeting suspects in Dzorwulu under the impression that he was purchasing six kilograms of gold worth about US$450,000.

Police reports indicate that the suspects allegedly disguised themselves as officers from the Criminal Investigations Department and members of the military, before ambushing the victim at gunpoint and escaping with the valuables.

The first breakthroughs in the case led to the arrest of Mohammed Umaro, also known as Alhaji, alongside Gabriel Sewornu, who is also referred to as Dangote.

As the investigation widened, authorities linked the operation to two military personnel, Lance Corporal Eugene Akurugu and Lance Corporal Emmanuel Arko, popularly known as Bullet. Three police officers were also implicated: Inspector Richmond Osei, Corporal Gideon Anor, and Lance Corporal Felix Deku Tetteyga.

The Police Service has since confirmed that all implicated officers have been interdicted while disciplinary and criminal investigations continue.

Further intelligence-driven raids carried out on May 23 and 24, 2026, resulted in the arrest of additional suspects, including Justin Oduro, also known as Don King or Mafia, Clement Gyasi, and Farouk Zakari.

All suspects remain in custody and are assisting investigators, while security agencies continue efforts to track down other individuals believed to be part of the wider syndicate.
