I’m in Parliament for My Constituents, Not the Creative Industry – A Plus Declares
Ghanaian musician and newly elected Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has outlined his priorities as he prepares to take office, stressing that his focus will remain on serving his constituents rather than championing the entertainment industry.
In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, A Plus underscored that his parliamentary mandate is rooted in the overwhelming trust and support of the people of Gomoa Central, not the creative community.
“I want to be clear—my purpose in Parliament is not to fight for the entertainment industry,” he stated. “My primary responsibility is to work for the people of Gomoa Central, who voted overwhelmingly for me. They believed in my vision, and my focus is on delivering for them.”
A Plus also reflected on the lack of institutional support from major creative industry bodies during his political journey.
“When I decided to contest, no collective support came from organizations like MUSIGA or FIPAG,” he revealed. “Only a few close friends in the industry stood by me. That’s why my commitment is to the people who elected me, not the creative sector.”
Addressing the state of the creative industry, A Plus critiqued what he described as a lack of unity and focus among its stakeholders. However, he commended dancehall artist Shatta Wale for his consistent and insightful advocacy.
“Shatta Wale has been making a lot of sense lately,” he noted. “If industry players would listen to his ideas, they could truly benefit from them.”
The newly elected MP achieved a decisive win in Gomoa Central, garnering 14,277 votes to unseat the incumbent MP, Naana Eyiah Quansah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), by a margin of 2,640 votes.
Looking back on his political journey, A Plus revealed that his ambition to serve in Parliament began six years ago, a dream he actively prepared for by pursuing higher education.
“I started preparing for this path years ago,” he explained. “I returned to school to earn a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s, and an LLB, arming myself with the knowledge and tools I’d need. Today, I’m proud to see those efforts bear fruit.”
With a clear vision and a focus on governance, A Plus is ready to prioritize the development of Gomoa Central while allowing the creative industry to pursue its own course under its leaders’ guidance.
