Ghanaian reggae musician and media personality Blakk Rasta has opened up about two frightening moments from his childhood when his life almost ended before it had barely begun.
Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, the outspoken broadcaster reflected on the incidents, both of which happened while he was still a young boy growing up in Tamale.
One of the experiences occurred during a trip to a dam where he and other children often went to swim. Many of them, he admitted, had little idea how to swim, yet they still ventured into the water. On that particular day, things quickly took a dangerous turn when he suddenly found himself going under.
“I missed death twice. I still don’t understand why I didn’t die. We children used to go there to swim, even though many of us didn’t know how to swim. At some point, I started sinking and realised I couldn’t come back up,” he said.
Blakk Rasta said panic set in as he struggled in the water. Believing his life was about to end, he instinctively turned to prayer.
“I was about seven years old. I recited the prayer and held my breath because I thought I was going to die,” he said.
He credits a friend who was nearby with pulling him out and saving him from what could have been a tragic outcome.
The reggae artist also recalled another close call that happened while he was climbing a tree as a child. What began as a simple adventure quickly turned risky when his clothing got snagged on a branch.
Left suspended in the air, he realized the ground beneath him was covered with metal pipes. A fall, he said, would likely have ended in severe injury.
“One branch was about to break, and below me were metal pipes. If I had landed there, my head would have been smashed. That was what saved me,” Blakk Rasta further stated.
